USHUAIA: the city of the end of the world, mountain, ski centre & lakes

South America ends at Tierra del Fuego, a large triangular island beyond the Magellan Straits, so for south that it is still frontier country. When in 1520 Ferdinand Magellan explored the straits which join the Atlantic and Pacific and now are named after him he was amazed by the smoke and fires which seemed to appear at every turn. These were always kept alight by the local Indians and caused the Island to be called ‘Tierra del Fuego” (Fire land).

Ushuaia, the capital city, has a special charm as it is the southernmost city in the world. There are direct flight from Buenos Aires on a daily basis and it is a 4 hour flight approx. Accommodation is good in the area and there is quite a variety of hotels.

Today the scenery remains as exciting as when the first explorers discovered the area. Wildlife, scenic beauty and a rich history of missionaries, Indians and a penal colony which ran until the late 1940’s are the main attractions ...
