SALZBURG – Mozart, Salzburg Festival, Sound of Music, Skiing ...

The city is located on the banks of the Salzach river, at the northern boundary of the Alps. The backdrop of mountains to the south contrasts with the rolling plains to the north. The inner city, or old town, is dominated by its baroque towers and many churches. This area is surrounded by two smaller mountains, the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg.
The medieval fortress is only the first monument of the Salzburg skyline that will catch your eye. When you see the baroque churches, palaces and gardens that cradle the old centre of the town, you will be remember that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here at the middle of the 18th century in today's famous Getreidegasse.
You can still detect the wealth that this town enjoyed when it was ruled by the powerful prince-bishops.
...The gold, silver and salt reserves of the Salzburg mountains were the source of this small country's special position, which remained politically independent for a long time.
