LITHUANIA – VILNIUS: The  Surprising Capital of Culture

Vilnius architectural diversity - its many churches and towers, fortifications, secluded medieval courtyards and narrow streets are a testimony to the city's rich history. The old town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Modern Vilnius is a fascinating mix of old and new, with architect influences from diverse sources as Gothic, Italian Baroque and the social housing of the Soviet Union.

Vilnius is the European capital of culture in 2009, which means a lot!

Shall you be interested in unusual sights, then stroll in the street of Uzipis, a kind of „Lithuanian Montmartre“, an area where artists have settled down and which hides curiosities in every corner of the district!

TRAKAI:

In about 30 minutes drive from city center of Vilnius you arrive to the former capital of Lithuania – Trakai, -  which is situated on an island in the middle of a lake. The 14th century red brick castle now houses the Art Museum. Trakai is a small town, its main attraction being the old part, notable for the wooden houses built by the Karaites, a tribe of Turkic people.
