ATHENS

Athens, is the capital of Greece. The city of Socrates and Pericles took its name by its protector, goddess Athena, daughter of Zeus, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. Since World War II, Athens expanded rapidly from 700,000 to almost 4 million inhabitants. The area around the capital, Attica, is now home to about one-third of the country's entire population. Athens of today is a modern metropolis, having strong links with the past and many prospects for the future. It is a vibrant city with great appeal and charm. It is among the most beautiful, hospitable and exciting cities. It is also one of the safest and most affordable cities in Europe as it is stated in the EUROSTAT, the official EU statistical publication.
The island of Santorini is perhaps the most breathtaking of all the Greek islands. Around 1500 B.C., a volcanic eruption destroyed the central part of the island, leaving a crescent shaped rim of cliffs around a harbour formed in the volcanic caldera. The small picturesque villages, built literally in and on the rock and the impressive black coloured sandy beaches on the west side of the island present the visitor with a unique view.
