GORENJSKA REGION

Alpine Slovenia covers the north-west area of the country where it western part reaches borders of Austria and Italy. The best known parts are probably the lakes of Bled and Bohinj. Bled - the picture-postcard Alpine town which was once the preferred choice of the Austro Hungarian Empire’s elite and its many charms include a medieval castle, perched high on a rocky cliff, a scenic lake studded by a tiny wooded island, and the alpine splendour of the nearby Triglav National Park, a natural wonderland of glacial valleys, glittering peaks, Limestone canyons, ice-cold tarns, flowered meadows, Alpine forests, Pretty hamlets and cascading waterfalls.
The king of the region is undoubtedly Mt Triglav, at 2,864 metres the highest peak in Slovenia, which has looked down on all below it like an owl for all time, and has a special place in Slovenian folklore. This area is also the centre of skiing in Slovenia, with Kranjska Gora being the best-known resort and the ski jumping at Planica attracting thousands of visitors every year.
The Alpine Slovenia is perfect for lovers of outdoor activities of every description, with year-round fun including skiing and snowboarding in winter, as well as hiking, trekking, climbing, mountaineering, mountain-biking, rafting, rowing and swimming in summer.
